For sure, those who are so concerned with their future in this country are viewing the 2010 elections as a crucial part of this new generation. Of course, we must treat this thing seriously. With the Amnpatuan Maguindanao Massacre flooding the news daily without any justice being served to the victims, of course we must act as early as now to protect this nation from those who would just continue the same barbaric attitude towards public service. The upcoming 2010 elections must be a venue of our nationwide, if not worldwide, Filipino unity to stop and eradicate these stuff in our government.

I was not able to attend the ANC Presidential Forum held in UST though I was invited due to conflicting schedules but I do always read news and commentaries online. I always compare and criticize the candidates. I want to know them more. I want to pick the most deserving candidate for my precious vote. I know for myself that I can make a difference, that my vote can help me voice out my opinion worldwide. And I want every registered voter to do the same. To do in their own little ways to know their bets.
Like everyone else, I still can’t pick my own bet for the presidential post as of this moment. Gibo may have the capability and intelligence. His answers to various fora he had attended are the best if not the most intellectual ones. But we’ve seen this thing before. GMA also has the brain and the capability to run this country. But after almost a decade of being in the position, rampant controversies faced her administration, poverty is still our main concern, and the list of unlawful crimes is endless. Noynoy is promising though, I must admit. His name has never been associated with any controversy. He is so innocent to think that he’s carrying a great political blood line. Villar carries the story of being a survivor of Sipag and Tiyaga. That he was once a poor citizen of this nation. That he understands the heart of the country because he himself experiences how to be a poor. But the controversies under his name make it so hard to believe that he is the man that we need. Gordon, on the other hand, is different. He’s so idealistic. It’s like he’s thinking that everything will be in order according to his platforms that easy. He is so confident enough to make us believe that there’s still hope for this country and that is under his administration. And Erap, well, he’s still claims to be the Erap para sa mahirap. As a showbiz personality-turned-political celebrity, he’ll forever have his loyal followers. And that’s all. I just hope that they’ll open up their minds for the reality; that we don’t need a bunch of popular stars in order to run the country.

We still have time to know them and the other candidates. We still have time to research on them. To comment on them. To ask them. To criticize them. Perhaps, these season of the election period is the best time to approach them.

  • 2010 Philippine Election is crucial. First factor to
    consider is the automation of election. A percent of the total registered voters know how automation will run but what about the ‘less’ and of great size? Is it a trial and error process then? Candidates, they’re all promising but who’s who, we must think and analyze the sits’, who’s the right one to lead and mold the new Philippines in 2010. And the Maguindanao Massacre was really alarming.

  • I no longer believe in a democratic system. I want something else. Not communism, mind you. For now, my take on the election is this: the Filipinos are still in the adolescence stage of its maturity in handling its own democracy. It’s so eager to move forward and yet it can’t recognize that partying at night is not advisable when there’s a scheduled exam the next day. This is evident on the pressure that the Filipinos’ are putting on the shoulders of its leader — the President. There’s so much romanticizing of the hero concept that when the hero seems to commit a single mistake, he or she must be pulled apart. Both concepts are extreme in nature which is an exaggerated behavior that most adolescents exhibit. A reminder for those who are still voting that a government is not the President only. The government consists of other officials. And that a government position is not about power in designation but designation that has powers. The government is reflective of the people. Tear down the government and you tear down yourself. Likewise build the government and you build yourself. Kaya naman I don’t believe in a multi-party system. It spreads out the votes and their allies, dividing the country in segments. That’s what we are building and that’s what we are getting. That’s the beauty and ugliness of democracy.

    @Random Student,

    if so, what’s the best thing to do? Election is near, kung magbabago pa tayo ng government system, wala nang oras…

  • We don’t have to change anytime soon. Let whoever wins take his post. It may take 3-5 more presidents before my dream happens. Baka after mag-18 candles ng collective Filipino eh magseryoso syang grumadweyt ng college. If not, papatunayan lang nya na magiging bum s’ya for the rest of her life. As I mentioned in my old comments, the next President will just suffer the inadequacies of Filipino democracy (sensationalized journalism, cynicism in politics, misuse of rights, abuse of rights, etc.). And I’m not just talking about the government officials. Pati mga so-called advocacy groups (genuine or just sleeper cells of communism). Adolescence is a vicious cycle until college graduation. Confusing hormones, tendency to exaggerate, etc. So is the collective Filipino in a democratic system of government. Some 30-somethings still have an adolescent mindset. Gan’un rin tayo as a nation. A puppy love gone sour is a persistent hang up. We are stuck in the past. Martial law has limited our capacity to gauge the issue of change. Our attention span is juvenile in nature. An adolescent that’s without structure has no one supervising him/her kaya naman may rebellious streaks. No one is good enough for him/her. Jaded. And yet dreamer. 3-5 more presidents before being a young professional. I hope we get there soon.

    @Random Student,

    hmm.. I was just thinking, what if, let’s say come the time that the 5th or 6th president after this one was elected, how sure are we (putting your perspective in here) that we will become the ‘young professional’ that you’re saying? Paano kung we’re struggling adolescent pips pa rin by that time? And before natin maabot yang ‘young professional’ level na yan, as early as now, there should be steps na in reaching that goal.

  • After the 1986 constitution, there were already steps made in Ramos’ time to modify it to bring the country to a level of understanding the times. Unfortunately hanggang ngayon the noisy minority (because the provinces and Mindanao are also the Philippines, not just Manila and key cities) doesn’t think it’s time. They are still struggling with an ex-flame from the ’70s and early ’80s, over-romanticizing the struggle and the yellow ribbon. Think of a whining person at the bar. With people who do not wish to really work and just consider being cynics in the multi-media spectrum as work (picture an adolescent who graduated but refuses to receive calls from potential employers), how can the steps necessary to make a mature Philippines happen? This will drag on and on until they consider Mindanao and the rest of the country as important as Manila. After all, the constitution doesn’t only apply to Manila. A flood in Manila is picked up by CNN. Elsewhere in the country, the media mileage and the law don’t seem to apply. A small insurgency in Manila is instantly a one-week mileage by broadcast networks. The daily civil wars in Mindanao seems to be just ho-hum. Just because journalists died, a massacre suddenly becomes news-worthy and shocking. Before them, so many have died (and they were not journalists)in so many ways there. The constitution must work for them, too. Any part of the whole body is as important as the heart or head. Any attempt to manage the problems there must not be misinterpreted to be shadows of the past. It’s pathetic to whine about one’s ex after decades of doing so. More than moving on, let’s move forward. Let us understand that the election is a numbers game. Have 20 presidentiables and we just further segment our country. It’s like you can’t buy more with P10. Change what’s vital (for example make the salary P20) and you can buy more, even save. Let us change the rules for a better future.
