I don’t know if this is for real but I’ve been searching for answers regarding the reason behind why do we have the slowest internet connection?
I know we’re not considered to be an industrialized country but it doesn’t follow that we have to be left behind in most of the technological advancements. For most of the time, we are always left behind because the advanced technology in Japan or in the US are not yet being embraced in the Philippines. In short, hindi pa natin kailangan yung technology na ginagamit sa kanila so malamang hindi pa talaga tayo makakasunod ng agad-agad. But when it comes to internet connection, ang dami-dami nang mga Pilipino ang sobrang hooked sa internet be it in online games, social networking, blogging or research and communications such as email and online streaming.
In one of our Special Topics discussion, our instructor asked us, ‘hindi ba kayo nagtataka kung bakit ang bagal-bagal ng internet connection sa Pilipinas while in other countries, ang speed nila ay nasa mbps na?’
I didn’t replied to his question though I know in myself na I’ve been asking that question even before pa. I was waiting for him to give me the reason para naman mapayapa na yung isip ko. Then he started sharing this story.
A long time ago, PLDT established it’s telecommunication wires (in the form of coaxial) in the country. This is the reason why PLDT is the backbone of Philippine telecommunications industry. Smart, Globe, Sun, Bayan, DigiTel and the rest are just paying for PLDT’s infrastructure for them to continue their services. But the installation of the said telecommunication wires are not done in cash. It was said that PLDT lend a money to initially lay out the telecommunication infrastructure across the country.
Because technology runs in a faster pace, coaxial are now being replaced by optical fibers. And we know for a fact that installing optical fibers requires a huge amount of money. Optical fiber is the only way that we can maximize the internet speed that we’re using but PLDT could not afford to replace all the existing coaxial wires that was previously installed. This is the reason why PLDT has to slowly replace the coaxial wires by optical wires. Hindi pwedeng biglaan. And for this very reason, hindi pa talaga kakayanin ng Pilipinas na makapag-offer ng high speed internet connection because our infrastructure itself is not yet fully ready to serve the market.
I’m not saying that the story is the real reason why we got this slowest internet connection but may pagkatotoo rin naman yung kwento. Hopefully, if this one is true, magawan sana ng paraan ng PLDT, in cooperation with our national government (ASA!) and private telecoms such as Smart, Globe, Bayan and DigiTel, na mapabilis ang pag-i-install ng mga optical fibers.

thanks for the info.
‘Yan ang resulta ng tinatawag na ‘independence’, Philippine independence from Japanese and the Americans!

Galing mo bro… We are on the same field, but I didn’t realize if your instructor’s opinion is not just an ordinary opinion but a fact…

Interesting.
It would have been more intriguing if you could have cited sources to back up the claim. Otherwise, this may just be gossip. Certainly, there is a back-story as to why the Philippines is suffering from slow internet connections (along with the less than to be desired quality of service from their customer care and technical support groups). Maybe you could drop the external relations department of the telco a note to inquire about your claim? Or send to them a copy of your blog entry, to give them a chance to refute or not the reasons you have noted down?
Oh, but before you hit the ’send’ button to the folks at that place… you may want to run the text of your blog entry through a spell/grammar checker. Good grammar results in greater impact.
Thanks for the info…
Pwede rin na ‘yan ang cause… Haha!

just text me if you really want to have at least an idea what is really happening in telecoms industry in the philippines…09161328563…kilala mo ako ehheh…
i don’t think that’s the reason. I think PLDT had paid their infrastructure already, magkano ba kinita ng Smart last year, billions di ba? PLDT and Smart bale iisa na yan. Kung prepaid access mo per minute bayad di ba? so kung mabagal connection mo mas marami kang babayaran mas marami kita nila. Though Globe had begun laying out their optical fibre backbone entire Luzon, dpa napapakinabangan i think. If you go to Manila from northern Luzon iyun yung ihinuhukay nila sa gilid ng H-way
